Hutch Re-do

I've always loved hutches and was so excited when my friend Heather told me she was looking for one and wanted me to paint it for her!  As you know with the Facebook swap sites you have to pretty much just luck up or you will miss the great deals that are on there.  Well, I lucked up one morning and saw this hutch and tagged Heather with it and here it is:)

She got the piece to me in separate parts.  Since Trey was out of town most of the week I just painted the top piece in the house.  The weather was too yucky to try to move it again to my workshop.  She had already decided that she wanted it black and white and by looking at it I thought it would be an easy redo.  "Thought" being key word here:)  The back part of this is paneling...looking back I probably should have primed this first BUT I didn't.  That's a lot of wood to cover.  Both top and bottom took 3 coats of paint!

Now moving on to the bottom part...I started by removing all the hardware and cabinet doors.  The plan was to just spray paint the hardware black.

On any other hardware I just spray painted right after I washed/dusted it off...well, that didn't work this time!!

Uh oh!  So what do I do now???  I had read before to boil hardware to remove old paint so I figured what could it hurt.  The hinges did the same thing.  So into boiling water they go!!

So how long does hardware cook - ha!  I let it boil for about 15 minutes...the hinges came out clean after I wiped them down.  You could tell there was another layer of "something" coated on them...the drawer pulls did not look any different except I was able to get black off.  To make a very long story short, I ended up buying a spray paint with a primer in it and after a few coats it worked!!

Next I reattached the doors and distressed a little around the edges of the drawers and top.  I love how it turned out:)

Halfway finished...now time to move on to the top piece.  The cabinet doors on the top have beautiful beveled glass it in and I was a nervous wreck afraid I would end up breaking them.  I slightly distressed around the edges and the back paneling.

I'm very pleased with the end result...& I've already received a quick text from Heather thanking me again and saying she loves it - YAY!  

Scalloped Top Table Re-Do

I bought 2 of these scalloped top tables off of a Facebook swap site many months ago...I just couldn't pass them up.  They are beautiful, sturdy and part of the Hekman furniture collection (which I didn't know till I got home).  I never intended to paint them the same because they are pretty big and just think they would work perfectly in between two chairs in a sitting area.  I painted one of them many months ago and just finished the other one yesterday!

The top of this one was messed up...so I had to start by sanding the top.

Y'all are going to get tired of hearing about my new knobs that I'm totally obsessed with but after staring at this piece for a while I thought it would look great with just one big chunky fun knob in the middle...so I had to wood fill the original hardware holes.

I LOVE red and have fallen in love with Sherwin Williams "Red Bay".  I still get freaked out every time I start painting a piece red...it always comes out fuchsia!  I actually went back to Sherwin Williams the first time this happened to tell them that they mixed my paint wrong - they assured me that it is red when it drys....they were right:)

I decided not to distress this piece...I think the color is so pretty and I love the way the dark wood shines through.  I just stained the top, waxed it for protection and she's good to go!

Refurbished Dresser

I just delivered this dresser to re-Runs today and wanted to share with you its transformation!  It was a huge one.  Put a few hours in this one.

I got this dresser many, many months ago (probably a year) from a sweet friend's mom.  I went to pick it up and it sat in our garage at our other house for months and then made the move with us!

Overall it was in good shape.  The top boards were loose and the drawers needed some more support so they would slide in & out better.  So to begin with I just basically took it apart.

I had already decided that I wanted to paint the body of it antique white and the top black...so I started with one coat of paint on the body and the drawers.

I love all the lines on the drawers...perfect for distressing!!  Luckily Trey & I had picked up some wooden keyhole covers that worked PERFECTLY on these drawers.  We had this piece in mind when we found them at an antique store.

I just painted them black and glued them on with Gorilla Glue.  Then I painted the top black and called in Mr. Whitley to nail the top pieces back together and I have to give him full credit for working on the drawers, too.

I couldn't wait to use my new knobs that I found for a HUGE bargain at Ross.

I love the marble inlay on the top.

AND here is the finished piece.  Entry way, end of the hall, kitchen - this is a beautiful piece for any room.

Race Bib & Medal Holder

I posted recently where I finally made a board to hold my race bibs - when I use to scrapbook all the time I would put them in there, but since I let myself get SO FAR behind doing that I just gave up.  I knew I wanted to keep them but just wasn't sure what to do with them.  THEN came Pinterest and as you all know you can find anything there...I made this quick board to hold all my race bibs!

Then, a friend of an awesome friend contacted me about making a "double" bib/medal holder that she had seen on Etsy.  Sure, I can do that...I love the way it turned out:)

I used the "L" hooks so you can hang a lot of medals on each one.

I noticed that I used my 2011 Marathon bib as a template...this excites me & makes me nervous!!  February 2015 I will be running my 5th marathon- Woo!Hoo!

Fabric Lined Drawers!!

It's been 1 1/2 years since I last blogged any of my furniture pieces.  That's crazy but if you have followed me on Facebook you know we've had a little going on this past year...now that hopefully life has settled down some, I plan on blogging every new piece that I put in my antique booth.  I love doing it so here's to my FIRST post in years...

I found this piece at the Habitat Restore in Brevard, NC over Thanksgiving.  I knew the bottom drawer would need some work where the veneer was broken off, nothing a little wood filler can't fix.  I thought it definitely had potential & I loved the small drawer pulls.

I decided to paint this piece ASCP Duck Egg Blue for the body and SW Antique White for the drawers.  I love the contrast of the two colors...

When I bought this piece I was so blown away by its beauty and the price that I didn't even open the drawers...it would not have changed my decision to buy this piece but the inside of the drawers were pretty nasty - old spray on felt!  Afters hours of searching on Pinterest to try to figure out how to remove it and realizing that was going to take way too much work I decided to scrap off as much of the "furriness" that I could and cover it with fabric!  SUCCESS-I love it and now want to cover every drawer I have!

Headboard/Footboard to Bench Transformation!!

I'm very proud of this re-do...it all started with a trip to the Habitat Re-Store in Brevard, NC.  This lonely headboard was just begging me to buy it and at the time I didn't have a clue what to do with it.  The railings came with it too.  I thought that trying to sell a single twin bed frame may be difficult so this stayed at the cabin for months until we recently went up there when my cute nephew came to town.

After searching on Pinterest for some ideas I came across transforming this headboard into a bench - how clever!

We even got Haydyn to help...

Haydyn & I tested it out to make sure it will hold weight:)

We used the footboard for arm rests...

Uncle Trey paid Haydyn with his world famous bbq ribs...I lost count as to how many he ate...LOL!

We packed the bench up and took it back to Simpsonville and I FINALLY finished it today!

I am planning on taking this piece to re-Runs tomorrow morning.

I already know of a few new pieces that I will be adding in July, but for now I am beach bound!!!
